FAQ

  • What ages do you teach?

Lessons are available for students ages 5 and up. Adults are welcome, too! Whether you're new to music or returning after a break, instruction is tailored to meet you where you are.

  • Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes! Trial lessons are a great way to meet, ask questions, and explore fit before committing to a weekly schedule. I offer a one-time 30-minute trial lesson at a discounted rate so you can see if our approach is the right fit for you.

Reach out to schedule a free 30-minute trial.

  • How do I know if my child is ready for lessons?

Readiness looks different for every student, but a general interest in music, basic attention span, and the ability to follow simple instructions are good signs. If you're unsure, a trial lesson is a great way to explore fit.

  • What instruments do you teach?

Private and group instruction is available for: Piano, guitar, and bass.

I do also offer other enrichments which include: Ensembles, Music Theory, Songwriting & Composition, Music Technology (recording, editing, production basics). Please see the “Education Programs” for more information.

  • What styles of music do you teach?

Lessons are tailored to student interests and goals. Whether you're into classical, pop, worship music, rock, folk/indie, or jazz, instruction includes a mix of technique, theory, and creative exploration.

  • Do you offer group lessons?

Yes! Group lessons (2–6 students) are available for students of similar age or skill level. Group learning encourages peer motivation, listening skills, and collaboration—especially fun for siblings, homeschool pods, or families seeking a more budget-friendly option.

  • Do you offer lessons during the day?

Absolutely. Daytime availability is offered specifically for homeschool families, co-ops, and school partnerships. Beyond private lessons, I also offer music curriculum support, enrichment classes, and partnership options for homeschool groups.

  • What happens if we miss a lesson?

I understand that sometimes life happens — illnesses, emergencies, or unexpected conflicts may occasionally cause a student to miss a lesson. Here’s how I handle make-ups:

Notice Required: Please give at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel a lesson to be eligible for a make-up

    .
Limited Make-Up per Month: Make-up lessons are limited to two per month for qualifying absences. Additional absences may forfeit the lesson.

Designated Make-Up Times: Make-up lessons are scheduled at another time that doesn’t conflict with regular students’ lessons. This helps keep the schedule running smoothly.

No Shows or Last-Minute Cancellations: Unfortunately, lessons missed without proper notice (no-shows) cannot be rescheduled or refunded.

I aim to be as accommodating as possible while respecting everyone’s time and commitment to learning. Thanks for your understanding!

  • How do we pay?

Payment is due by the 1st of each month. Each month, you’ll receive an invoice by email from My Music Staff. The email includes a secure link that lets you view your invoice and pay online using your preferred payment method—credit card, debit card, or bank transfer (if available).

  • Do you travel to students?

All lessons are currently held at the studio in Mills River. In certain cases—such as school partnerships or homeschool co-ops, on-site instruction may be available upon request.

If traveling to Mills River presents a challenge, families may inquire about in-home lessons; a travel fee will apply. Please reach out directly to discuss availability and rates.

  • Do you offer recitals or performance opportunities?

Yes! Recitals and casual performance opportunities are offered throughout the year. These are optional but encouraged, and designed to be a positive, confidence-building experience.

  • What should we expect when we come for a lesson?

My studio is located in our family home, with a private entrance for students and families. The space is quiet, professional, and designed to help students feel relaxed and focused.

Parents are welcome to stay during lessons, but not required. You're also welcome to enjoy our shared 10½-acre property—feel free to take a walk while you wait! Siblings are welcome to play outside if you are supervising.

  • What should we bring to lessons?

Students should bring their instrument (if portable), lesson books or materials, a notebook or binder.

Materials will be recommended after the first few lessons.

  • Do you take referrals?

Yes! You will receive a free month for any referral you send after their first month of lessons.
